BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 25 – Taking Care of Myself

Week 25 – Taking Care of Myself

I lost monetization on my YouTube channel yesterday morning. I still don’t know the exact cause, as the “Support” team refuses to elaborate beyond telling me it was revoked for “Duplication”, but I’m without revenue on the channel for at least a month. That, combined with the reemergence of a certain lunatic making accusations on my channel, plus the technical issues I had with Sunday night’s stream, sent me into a really scary downward spiral that I don’t want to describe here. I’m seeing my therapist on Thursday, and I’m hoping he will put me on more stable ground.
All streams and YouTube videos are on hold for at least a week. I’m probably going to take the week off my other pursuits as well to try to get my head together.
This morning, I took down the Precure Library archive project I’ve been working on since February, as that was probably what got my monetization yanked… and to be on the safe side, I took down everything else that got flagged. I hated to do this, but since the alternative was almost assuredly losing it for good, I decided that I’ve put way too much work into Silent InvenTOYry to have all the episodes lose their revenue. There’s a message on my channel about the removal, one part of which says that since the PL was drawing the vast majority of my traffic, I expected mass unsubscriptions to follow. To my surprise, I’ve received many kind messages from my viewers offering support and assuring me that they’ll stick around. Thank you, guys. I don’t think I deserve such kindness, but I’ll try to repay it in turn.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 24 – Writing in Recursive

Week 24 – Writing in Recursive
Thank ArtIdiotGuy222 that you’re seeing this go up tonight. The Blogress Report completely slipped my mind until just now, don’t ask me why.
I warned people that Shattered Skies Chapters 35 and 36 were going to be big ones… now you see why. 36 in particular has gotten me more feedback than any other chapter of late. I’m kinda thrilled, because the events of said chapter have encouraged a lot of people to seek out more information on “the entity” and where it comes from. I chose not to use its name in-story to give it a sense of unspeakable horror and mystique, and it looks like that was the right call, but several people noticed the clues and managed to figure out exactly what it was. Since its source material is criminally overlooked and underappreciated, I consider myself to be doing a good service by pointing people in that direction. Fun fact: I’ve had portions of this chapter where the entity attacks written out almost two years in advance, because I’m crazy that way.
Guesses are also trickling in as to who exactly Fantine is. As with the entity, I don’t want to outright reveal her actual name, but there are more than enough clues already if you know where to look. I’ve promised several people that if no one’s guessed correctly by Chapter 42, I’m going to devote a special scene and/or a short chapter to dropping a big hint as to her origins.
In other Shattered Skies related news, there’s now a recursive fanfic in the works! VDrake’s The Changeling of the Guard has been honored with a few of these, and now it’s my turn. I’m limited as to what I can say at the moment, but the author and I are communicating closely in order to make this thing happen. It’s a neat little experiment, and I look forward to sharing it once it’s done.
So, Cardcaptor Sakura: The Clear Card Arc is now over. I haven’t seen the final episode for myself yet, but I’m hoping the finale is at least as satisfying as the last endpoint for the anime, that being the Sealed Card movie. As of now, my feelings on Clear Card are sort of mixed. I absolutely love seeing Sakura and co. again, of course, and the series has been wonderful to look at and listen to, but… well, assuming the explanation as to where the Clear Cards came from is accurate, it feels… sort of underwhelming, to be honest. Like it makes the whole arc less of an essential continuation of CCS and more of a postscript season. Don’t get me wrong, watching Clear Card every week has been one of the highlights of the year so far, but it hasn’t left the kind of indelible impression the first anime did. As I said, though, I still have yet to see the finale, so I’m hoping I’ve just made a snap judgment.
Anyway. The next project in the queue is Twilight’s Dreaming Chapter 2, which is overdue. That’s going to be my primary focus for the next week, or however long it takes to get done. I’ve also kicked off production of Episode 08 of Silent InvenTOYry, for an episode that I’ll have out in early August at the earliest. Thanks for your patience.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 23 – Hello Anxiety, My Old Friend

Week 23 – Hello Anxiety, My Old Friend
Well, I tried.
I was on a roll on Sunday, well into Chapter 36 of Shattered Skies and on track to finish only a couple days later than I said I would. I stopped when I noticed the time, around an hour before I was supposed to start my Sunday night stream of Tales of Symphonia. Over the next half hour, I put out my promos and set up all my streaming software. I was about to head upstairs to eat a quick dinner before the stream… and then I noticed the little red dots on the floor beneath my chair, right where our dog had just been lying. There was fresh blood all down her back legs, and it wasn’t stopping.
What followed was a series of frantic calls to the regular vet, the emergency vet, and the second emergency vet before I reached someone who could see her immediately. My family and I drove her out to the city limits to the only place that was still open, and then spent an excruciating forty-five minutes in the waiting room. All the while, I was in crisis mode and barely holding it together, convinced she was going to bleed out while we were sitting there. When the doctors finally took her in, I was already bracing myself for the worst. Annie’s going on ten years old, and we lost our last dog at about that age… and suddenly passing blood was what led me to have to put my last cat down.
Long story short, Annie’s okay, thank god. There was an abscess in her glands, but the vet took care of it and gave her some meds to clear up her inflammation. I’m relieved, of course, but I’ve been an emotional wreck since last night.
Chronic anxiety is something I would barely wish on anyone… certain conservative/fascists (same difference) being the exception. One minute you think everything is fine, the next you’re convinced your world is about to end. It’s not a question of “just calm down and think rationally”; your mind starts conjuring the worst possible outcome of every situation before you, and it’s like a TV on full volume that you can’t shut off. In my experience, cognitive behavioral therapy and other similar techniques only work when you’re confident in yourself and you have faith that they’ll be effective, and during my anxiety attacks, I can’t manage either. It’s always a little slice of my personal Hell when it happens, and I hate it… which is why I don’t talk about it most of the time.
As if that ordeal weren’t enough, there was what happened to another family while we were in the waiting from. A lady and her young daughter or granddaughter brought their dog in, wrapped in a towel, and the older lady said “She [the daughter] was taking her for a walk, we think she had heat stroke…” They took her into the back, the family followed a few minutes later… and then, perfectly audible even through several solid walls, we all heard the daughter make the most disturbing sound I’ve ever personally heard in my life. I can only describe it as a primal howl of grief. She was hysterical, sobbing “It’s my fault, I took her for a walk, it’s my fault!” over and over and over. When I saw her again as she and her family left, she was all cried out, and she looked… empty. I thought about saying something to her, but I didn’t. I was too afraid that I was going to be the next one grieving.
I mention this not to bring you all down, but to try to exorcise it… to get my feelings out in words so I can move past it. The sound that girl made is going to haunt my nightmares, because as much as I know all to well how hard it is to lose a pet… I’ve been fortunate enough that I’ve never felt at fault for it when it happens. This girl was young, maybe thirteen or fourteen by the look of it. I could tell by the look in her eyes that she’s going to blame herself for a long time, maybe the rest of her life. Things like that can put years on you. Whoever she is, wherever she is, I can only hope that she finds peace and comfort.
Anyway. For obvious reasons, I couldn’t get much done between then and now… I’ve been emotionally and physically exhausted all day. We’ll see what I can do over the rest of the week.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 21 – Incoming Doozy

Week 21 – Incoming Doozy
This week I did a ton of work on the next chapter of Shattered Skies. It’s looking like 35 and 36 are going to essentially be a two-parter, but if that’s the case, 36 will definitively end the “Rescue Arc” that’s been in progress since last January (!!!) I have something huge in mind for finishing off the arc, something I’ve been looking forward to writing for a long time… now the question is, where do I put the cutoff point? I’m thinking it should be right after Joker reveals that the mysterious artifact first mentioned in Chapter 29 is actually the [REDACTED], but we’ll see.
Minor changes to my Patreon: I’ve introduced a new $2-per-chapter reward tier, which gets you access to my private Discord server with an associated role. You also get this reward at the higher tiers, of course. Signal boost, please!
Some of you may have seen that I started a new LP on my YouTube channel last week: I’m doing a full playthrough of Little Witch Academia: Chamber of Time. I would have announced this in advance, but until last Tuesday I wasn’t sure if the game was actually coming out on Steam on time or not. Bamco, I’ve noticed, has a really bad habit when it comes to their smaller releases: they don’t get pages on digital distribution services until the actual day of the launch. The same thing happened with Accel World vs. Sword Art Online last year, so I should have expected this. Sigh. Anyway, what I’ve played of the game so far is really fun, and it’s great to see Akko and the gang again. I’ll be playing every Wednesday night until I finish the game, which puts the Overwatch OverWednesday streams on hold for a while. I’ll miss the new anniversary event, but eh.
And speaking of streams on hold: sorry, but there will be no streams this Friday or Sunday night. I have a job coming up this weekend which promises to be taxing, so I won’t have the time or energy to give streaming my all. Many apologies; I’ll do longer streams in the week following to make up for it.
That’s about it for me. Please remember to go check out LeiLani’s The Depths and vote for it on topwebcomics.com by clicking the link.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 20 – Plumbing “The Depths”

Week 20: Plumbing “The Depths”

First off: new Silent InvenTOYry! A full-length episode! Go watch it! As many times as possible! It was expensive to make!

Anyway. The runner-up title for this week’s Report was “Spectacularly Poor Timing”. Immediately after I finished griping about a slow week, Steven Universe dropped two episodes that… well. Far be it from me to spoil them for anyone who hasn’t seen them yet, but goddamn.

So. I decided to change the title in order to better plug The Depths, an up-and-coming anthro webcomic by LeiLani and ABD with coloring by Kino Jaggernov. I’ll just go ahead and drop the header here:

The Depths is already one of the best-looking webcomics I’ve ever seen, taking place in Tahiti and the surrounding oceans in 1938. It’s still in its first year-plus, so the plot is still developing, but the story revolves around a female otter named Leilani Perierre, and her burgeoning romance with the start of World War II in the background. Underwater scenes are difficult to do for even the best artists, but The Depths has them on nearly every page so far, and Kino Jaggernov’s colors and details are stunning. Seriously, it’s like looking at a Cousteau documentary. If you like furry comics of any stripe (heh, stripes), please visit The Depths and the other series on Dark Blue Comics, which you can find here. Caution: The Depths features mature and NSFW content, and is not intended for persons under 18 years of age. That said, said NSFW content is so far much more romantic than explicit, which is something rare in furry works, and I have to respect that. Props to LeiLani and company for class. I give The Depths a hearty recommendation, and ask that you consider supporting the series via Patreon or by voting for it on topwebcomics.com

Full disclosure: I’ve been in contact with LeiLani herself (the artist, not the otter!), and we’ve agreed to a sort of mutual plugging of our works. If all goes well, I’m hoping both The Depths and Tasakeru will get more readers. Fingers crossed.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 19 – Oh Look, A Tumbleweed

Week 19: Oh Look, A Tumbleweed

On the productivity front, this past week was mostly about Silent InvenTOYry. I shot about 80% of the episode on Thursday, as I thought I would be occupied all weekend with a series of jobs… but the most difficult of my three clients canceled at the last minute, which meant that I had a lot more time than I thought I would. Of course, I ended up spending most of that extra time playing Fortnite instead of working, but eh. Anyway, all the footage is shot now, and tomorrow I’m going to make an effort to get most if not all of the editing finished.

After the SI episode goes up, I may just kick myself until I finally make significant progress on the Book II Appendix. Either that or I’ll just crash for about a week.

With the official start of summer just around the corner, my petsitting business is bound to pick up again. I really hope I don’t have an insane workload like I did last year, though… all the extra money was great, but by September I was flat-out exhausted. If it gets to be too much, I may put several of my lower-priority projects such as my Twitch streams on hold for a while until things settle down. Fun’s fun, but work has to come first.

Sorry for another mundane Report, but they can’t all be action-packed…

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 18 – A Certain Movie You Might Have Heard About

Week 18 – A Certain Movie You Might Have Heard About

Surprise! Book IV of the Tasakeru relaunch is officially underway! The tagline “Everything changes” in regards to it is not hyperbole, and I have some substantial revisions planned for this book in particular… starting with a lengthy new scene in Chapter 1 that I’m quite proud of. I hope you enjoy it. I also have a new piece of art coming that will be added to the site’s Gallery soon, so keep your eyes peeled!

I now have everything I need for the next Silent InvenTOYry episode, and filming is underway! More updates are to come as I progress.

So I went to the movies on Friday, to see an obscure little film called Avengers: Infinity War… in short, I liked it. It was cute.

No, seriously, holy shit. Even for Marvel, the odds were against anything living up to six years of hype and ten years of development. I’d rather die than spoil anything, but I can say that somehow, miraculously, they did it. I’m impressed as all hell.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 17 – That Twitchy Feeling

Week 17 – That Twitchy Feeling

Last week, I streamed the first part of “BHS Plays Tales of Symphonia” on my YouTube channel. It was a special, double-length episode to make up for canceling the DDLC playthrough. The day after the stream, the video was hit with two copyright flags by YouTube’s wonderful automated system, meaning that it can no longer be monetized. The first flag I could understand; it took issue with the J-Pop song in the game’s opening movie. The second flag, though, was the one that really drove me up the wall. The system chose to flag 33 seconds of random footage from the start of the game for “visual content”, for no reason I can comprehend. Apparently everything else was fine save for the opening movie, but it was my last straw. The content ID system is bad enough when it’s flagging things correctly, but making arbitrary restrictions based on random parts of 15-year-old games… well, it’s so stupid and unfair that I resolved then and there to do all future live streaming on Twitch. Therefore, http://twitch.tv/bhsdesk will be the new home of “BHS Plays Tales of Symphonia” and other LPs. The archives for these streams will still go up on YouTube afterward, so don’t worry about missing anything. I’ve also decided to put my streams of Overwatch and Fortnite on a regular schedule so as to attract more viewers, so “Overwatch OverWednesday” will be every Wednesday night at 7 PM EST, and “Fortnite Friday” will be on Fridays at 7 PM EST. Sunday Streams will still be on Sundays at the same time.

Anyway. My big accomplishment last week was finally finishing Chapter 34 of Shattered Skies. As I’ve mentioned to several of you, I’ve had the scene with Homura’s light-speed pebble sniper shot in mind for over a month now. It went over so well that I’m almost disappointed that barely anyone has mentioned what happened to the other characters over the course of the chapter… I mean, yeah, I knew the pebble was golden, but guys… you’re overlooking some very important setups for future chapters, just so you know. XD Anyway, there’s two more chapters I have planned as denouement for the “rescue arc”, and then the next phase of the story can begin. It’s kind of a relief to be nearly done with this arc after a year and change, to be honest. Not that I didn’t have a blast writing and planning it all out, of course, but there’s so much more to come… including the Big Things happening in said next two chapters that will change the status quo going forward. :D

I may have to hold off on getting the next Silent InvenTOYry off the ground due to a shipping delay, so it looks like I may not get Episode 07 out this month after all. I may decide to shift gears for the remainder of the month and get out the first chapter of Twilight’s Dreaming instead. We’ll see what happens.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 16: All Hail Hugtto

Week 16: All Hail Hugtto

So hey, I finally got the second part of Viluy’s Database finished! Hooray, hooray, me! And I made significant progress on the next chapter of Shattered Skies as well. The week coming up is going to be crazy, but I’m making an effort to get Chapter 34 finished and posted within the next few days.

How about those last two Hugtto episodes, eh? As I said on Tumblr, barring any disastrous derailments in the show’s second half (as happened with poor Happiness Charge), I think we may have another strong contender for Best Precure Series alongside Heartcatch and Go! Princess. I mean, the show consistently impresses me in nearly every respect; it’s already got my favorite pink Cure since Blossom in Hana/Cure Yell, which is a hell of an achievement in and of itself.

On somewhat of a whim, I decided to check out this “Fortnite” thing that’s tearing things up in streaming circles. You can see the results on my YouTube channel, if you’re so inclined. I’m not anything approaching good at it yet, but I did manage to place eleventh out of 100 in Solo mode on Saturday morning, so that’s something.

Sorry for another short entry, but I’m running low on energy after a long day. I think I may call it an early night, in fact.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 15 – Madness Season Begins

Week 15: Madness Season Begins

First things first, I’d like subscribers to my YouTube channel to watch the video below, please:

Now that I’ve said what needed to be said, we can get down to standard business.

The “Madness Season” of the title refers to the fact that I’ll be keeping up with Cardcaptor Sakura: The Clear Card Arc, Darling in the FRANXX, Hugtto Precure, Boku no Hero Academia Season 3, Attack on Titan Season 4, Cutie Honey Universe, probably Magical Girl Boy / Magical Girl Ore (which seems solid so far), and Netflix’s A.I.C.O. -Incarnation- over the next twelve weeks or so… and that’s not counting any outliers I may pick up along the way, and the new Steven Universe episodes dropping this month. This is the most jam-packed season in recent memory, and most of those on that list are must-watches. Oof.

If my updates seem to drop to a slower crawl than usual, that’s the reason.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 14 – How’d Ya Like That Apple?

Week 14: How’d Ya Like That Apple?

I’m happy to report that Apple Fools Day was a rousing success. There were no technical hiccups with the stream or the recording software and everyone had a blast. For those of you who missed it, the full recording of the stream is up on http://picarto.tv/bhsdesk and will remain there indefinitely, and once I find a viable hosting platform for it, the file will go up for free download. Please note: the video file on Picarto has about twenty minutes of a standby screen ahead of the actual beginning of the stream. (I was running a Weird Al playlist while I performed my final sound checks. When you hit “Dare to be Stupid”, that marks the point where you should stop fast-forwarding.)

So now that that event is behind me, I find myself back on my regular projects. Working on writing in the lead-up to the stream was a lost cause, due to nervous excitement. With some time to cool down, hopefully I can concentrate on stuff. I think the next step should probably be finishing Viluy’s Database Part II, as that’s been on hold for the longest (er, if you don’t count the Book II Appendix, of course. Bad BHS. Bad.) The new Silent InvenTOYry needs some more new equipment before I can start filming, so that can wait. Book IV of Tasakeru is tremendously important to the series as a whole and I’ll be making significant changes to it, so I think I may take my time to plan it out a bit more. That leaves Shattered Skies Chapter 34, which is another major event… that one also needs to be handled carefully as there are a ton of characters to juggle. Perhaps I should make an outline.

The upcoming anime season is absolutely packed with stuff I want to see, including the new seasons of Boku no Hero Academia and Attack on Titan, Cutey Honey Universe, the second cours of Cardcaptor Sakura: The Clear Card Arc, and Darling in the FRANXX, and of course more of Hugtto Precure. All that plus any other new surprises that may pop up. There’s two magical girl series airing this season, one a parody (Magical Girl Boy/Ore) and one a Madoka-clone (Magical Girl Site). Unless I hear enough good things to change my mind, I think I’ll be passing on both of those; of the two, Magical Girl Boy would probably be my preference, because Site looks to me like yet another series that apes Madoka’s darkness and ignores its heart. Sigh. At least the Hugtto Cures and Honey will be there so I can get my fix.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 13 – Apple and Discord

Week 13 – Apple and Discord

For once, the Tech Gods have been merciful. On Thursday, I entered BHS Crisis Freakout Mode™ when my desktop’s operating system went bananas. With my usual tech support (VDrake) temporarily unavailable, I had no choice but to bring my PC in to a local repair shop. Hours later, I was told my that hard drive was failing and I needed a new one. That would have put a serious crimp in my plans for the next week or so, particularly my Apple Fools Day stream… so it was a stroke of good luck that when I called the repair place today, they told me they were able to fix the old drive without problems. I’m back on my desktop with all of my files and settings intact, and all is normal, knock on wood.

So! After a few days of uncertainty, I can thankfully say that the APPLE FOOLS DAY live stream will proceed as planned, this Sunday at 7 PM EST on http://picarto.tv/bhsdesk ! The promo video is below:

This is the special reward I promised all my followers and subscribers for helping me push my YouTube channel over 1000 subs in time. The event will be a live MSTing of a singularly bizarre, spectacularly insane work of fiction, one of my all time favorites. It’s running on Picarto and not YouTube due to said work still being under copyright by a major company, and thus liable to get yanked from YT despite Fair Use laws… but with Picarto, I should be safe. Please note: despite what it says in the promo video (which was prepared well in advance), you will NOT need a Picarto account to comment on the stream. Those who want to sign up are welcome to, of course, but it’s not required. If you want an alternative way to get in on the action, you can sign up for my brand new Discord server, Blazing Harbl Server: https://discord.gg/MYajJMM A Discord chat window will be overlayed on the stream, so if you’d rather comment there, feel free. And if for some reason you can’t make it on time, don’t fret! I’ll be making the entire stream available for free download as soon as I can find a reliable hosting site for the video file.

Now, for reasons explained above, I wasn’t able to get much work done on other stuff this past week… but once Apple Fools Day is all taken care of, I’ll have much more time to devote to other pursuits. Thanks for your patience.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 6 – Necessary Retcons

Week 6 – Necessary Retcons

You know, it occurs to me that in the two-plus years I’ve been doing Blogress Reports, I’ve barely written about Tasakeru at all. Which is weird, because Tasakeru is supposed to be my magnum opus, my passion project. I know at least part of the reason I don’t write about it is because I want to avoid spoiling the story for my readers, but still.

Well, this week I’ll be discussing it at least a little, because I have an important retcon that I’ve made as of last week. Normally I believe retcons should be applied as organically as possible, so that the audience doesn’t even notice them, but I think it’s important to call attention to this one.

Those of you who read Tasakeru (WHICH SHOULD BE ALL OF YOU, DAMMIT) know Lady Nadeshiko Argenteus by now. She’s the prickly, stoic, and ungodly stubborn Field Commander and Vice-Mistress of the Silver Order, and next in line for its leadership. Nadeshiko has had a wild journey as far as her character development goes; brutal honesty, I originally created her as a bit character for one scene in a “bad future” AU roleplay that I was hashing out with VDrake. She was supposed to be in that scene and then quietly disappear from the story… except she didn’t. I ended up bringing her back, and she patently refused to stay as a bit character. Something about her fascinated me, so I wrote a much younger Nadeshiko into the first draft of Eternity Awakes. She became a prominent supporting character and got a few chapters largely to herself in Books III through VI, and by the time I hit the wall with the first draft of Warriors, I was setting her up to play an even bigger role. As of the relaunch, she debuted in Book I, and she’s now the most important character aside from the primary antagonists and the Outcasts themselves. So basically, most of the history of Nadeshiko’s development has consisted of ignoring or downright rebelling against what I, the author, intended for her.

Now, during the process of rewriting Book II, while discussing my future plans for Nadeshiko, I was once again blindsided by a plot development that I never saw coming. What follows is technically SPOILERS, so skip the next paragraph if you’d prefer to be surprised.

So, over the course of the story, Nadeshiko is going to start a romantic relationship with a mate. A female mate. Said relationship won’t start for a while yet, but it is happening. And to that end, because this is intended to be a story for young adults and sexuality is a part of the story (handled tastefully, I hope), Nadeshiko is now seventeen years old at the start of the story, a few months shy of eighteen. Now, I stress that I had no idea I would be writing a relationship for her when I started the relaunch, so I wrote her as a fourteen-year-old just like I did in the last draft. Over the past few months, as I’ve planned out details, I realized that there was no way I could justify having one of my foremost LGBT+ characters be fourteen without some seriously unfortunate implications, given the extent of what I have planned. Yes, the age of legal adulthood in the world of Tasakeru is thirteen, and yes, it’s supposed to be a different culture, but there are some things you just can’t do. I want Nadeshiko and her mate’s relationship to be progressive and provide some much-needed diversity in the fantasy/YA genre. The last thing I want is for my efforts to be overshadowed by questionable decisions on my part. So, it’s not a major change, in the grand scheme of things, but I hope you’ll understand why it has to be made.

SPOILERS END

So. I managed to finish the new Silent InvenTOYry episode in record time, finishing roughly 80% of the episode in a 48-hour span. I was really happy with how it turned out… which of course meant that YouTube flagged it after a couple days. Their “remove audio” function completely borked the first upload, so I had to delete it and put up this new version today:

This of course meant that I lost all the upvotes and views from the first one, so I’d appreciate it if you guys could help me get them back.

My effort to boost the subscription numbers on my channel seems to finally be working. I hit on the bright idea yesterday of uploading Cure Yell’s transformation and attack footage from the first episode of Hugtto! Precure while it was still hot, and the result was 3000+ hits and a whole bunch of new subs in a day! I’m getting closer and closer to hitting my goal, so I think I’ll do the same for Cure Ange next week, just for the extra boost. After all, the item for my next Precure review won’t be here until after the Feb 20th deadline.

Now then. If I do break 1000, I’ve got something very special planned. As I said in the teaser video I uploaded on Thursday, if I hit the magic number I’ll be hosting a special reward live stream for my followers at a date in the near future. I still have work to do on the technical side of things, but I’ve got a site to stream on that WON’T autoflag me (I hope) and I’ve figured out how to get the media to run on it. More on this in the next few weeks.

And finally, there’s Hugtto itself! Based on the first episode, I’m pretty well sold. I’ll have a more detailed write-up when it’s not so late and once the whole team is assembled, but in brief: Hana/Yell is a precious dork, Hugtan isn’t at all the annoyance I feared she would be, Harry is shaping up to be one of my favorite mascots, the villains are actually threatening, and HOLY CRAP THE COMBAT IS BACK. As far as first episodes go, this one was a definite winner.

So. I hope you’ve all enjoyed both the look into my thought process and the new episode. More stuff coming soon.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 5 – Adventures in Self-Promotion

Week 5 – Adventures in Self-Promotion

I really, really wanted to have my second Silent InvenTOYry Semi-Short episode done tonight, but it’s not happening. To be fair to myself, I did get all the footage and pictures I need (*knocks on wood*) shot between my item’s delivery at 11 AM this morning and now, so. I’m fairly confident that the episode will go up tomorrow if I put in a full day’s work. The rush is so I can have my review posted as close as possible to the item’s release date, and thus get more views and hopefully more subscribers while the subject is still hot.

Why yes, I do still need more subs, how astute of you to notice. Most of my online activity for the past week has been spent on efforts to hit the looming February 20th deadline; I’ve been trying to increase engagement by uploading gaming streams almost every day. Because of that, my writing progress has suffered quite a lot… bleh. I now have even more respect for people who manage to put up videos on a weekly or daily basis.

I may have to break my four-month streak of Tasakeru updates this month… I’ll do my best to finish Soulsnatcher by Wednesday, but unless I pull off another last-minute save, it’s not looking promising. I owe you guys a Shattered Skies update too, of course, but InvenTOYry is taking priority until it’s finished.

Kira Kira Precure A La Mode has come to an end. After thinking about the events of the finale and the series as a whole, my final verdict puts the show in the upper-middle end of the scale in terms of my favorites. I adore the characters, especially Himari/Cure Custard and Bibury (or however her name is romanized). Both Aoi/Gelato and Yukari/Macaron won me over by having really strong spotlight episodes, and of course I love that with Yukari and Akira we’re closer than ever to an actual, confirmed, canon lesbian relationship in this franchise. However, the almost total lack of hand-to-hand combat really, really hurt this show. Much as I detest Mahou Tsukai, its fight scenes at least had a modicum of punching and kicking from what I saw. Thankfully, it appears that Toei actually listened to the complaints of the fanbase, because Cure Yell’s cameo in the final episode had her clobbering the monster into submission… and the fandom rejoiced. I’m already hearing from multiple but as of yet unconfirmed sources that the fighting is back in Hugtto, and that alone makes me giddy for the premiere next week.

Oh yeah, and I started watching Dragon Ball Kai last week. I’ve only ever seen bits and pieces of the Dragon Ball franchise; it’s always been on my “get around to it later” list because in its original anime form it takes so damned long to get through it. Kai’s cutting of the original DBZ‘s nigh-endless padding and filler has done wonders for my enjoyment of the show, and I’m studying the fight scenes very carefully for future Shattered Skies chapters.

Too tired to write anything else.

BHS Blogress Report: 2018, Week 4 – YouTube Screw Job

Week 4 – YouTube Screw Job

Welp. My plans to make extra money with my YouTube series have taken a fairly serious hit. Starting on the 20th of next month, all channels with less than 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of view time over the past year will be kicked off the monetization program, making it even harder for people who don’t already have massive fanbases and/or large amounts of money to pour into advertising to make a profit through the platform. Since I’m currently sitting at around 840 subscribers, I’ve been trying to promote Silent InvenTOYry in as many places as possible to try to beat the deadline. I’m good on hours, and I thought I had found a few ways to boost my sub count… but then on Saturday YouTube started purging dead or inactive accounts from people’s subscription numbers, which knocked me back down again. I’m not gonna lie: this really, really sucks. I want to keep doing my show, but if I can’t break 1K in the next four weeks, it’ll be that much harder to justify spending money on it.

Therefore, I’ve kicked preproduction of the next InvenTOYry episode into overdrive. The item I’m reviewing doesn’t ship until the end of the week, but I’m doing as much of the episode as I can in the meantime so I can get the episode posted as close to the release date as possible. As I said, I’m also trying to promote my channel in quite a few new avenues, with mixed results so far. Readers: if you or people that you know are interested in Japanese toys and collectables, PLEASE SUBSCRIBE. If you have subscribed already, you can still watch, like, share, favorite, and upvote whenever you can… the more people I have watching, the more likely it is that I’ll draw enough attention to pull in the 160+ subscribers I need. Links to all seven complete episodes are below:

I’m working on putting together a special celebratory thank-you stream for when I do hit the magic number, but that’s still in the very early planning stages. More on that later.

As you might imagine, this impending YouTube crisis has made it hard to concentrate on anything else. The last few days have been spectacularly nonproductive on the writing front, but I plan to sit myself down tomorrow and grind out at least two pages for either Soulsnatcher or Shattered Skies before I get distracted by other stuff. Easier said than done, I know, but…
